PALETTE PAINTINGS
These palette paintings are simple conceptual pieces in which the painting is both the landscape and the palette. These are the actual palettes used to produce the landscape. As can be seen, I generally only use about five pigments, missing the colors I need from them. Having the palette on the piece combines the painting with the process used to create it. Furthermore, the loose, abstract form of the palette provides an interesting contrast to the controlled, realistic landscape.
This series, which I worked on for a few years, began with the 1994's Palette Painting, which depicted olive trees in Spain. From there, I used this series to document some of the international travels through about 2000. In the last of the series, Palette Landscape, 2002, I had the palette bleed into the work itself.
